Medication Administration Online Program Training

OVERVIEW

This program is intended to provide Personal Support Workers (PSW) with the theory and best practice guidelines to prepare for medication administration in their Workplace setting. Graduates from this program need to work within their scope of practice, as outlined by their province/territory and facility of employment.

This program is not intended to replace a formal Medication Administration Orientation from employers.

This is a 50 hour program, delivered asynchronously, online in the Moodle Classroom.

Students have 3 months to complete the program and must have access to the internet and a learning device.

While this program was designed for Personal Support Workers, other health care disciplines are invited to take this program as well.

The theory is comprised of 8 Modules. Each Module contains resources specific to the topic with an associated exam. Students’ have 3 attempts to obtain a 70% passing grade on each exam.

Module 1: The Personal Support Worker Role in Medication Management.
Module 2: Pharmacodynamics: The Body’s Biological Response to Medications
Module 3: Medication Management Guidelines
Module 4: Insulin Administration
Module 5: Medication Administration Techniques
Module 6: Medication Errors/Omissions
Module 7: Safety & PRN Medications.
Module 8: Medication Administration in Home Care Settings
3 Tutorials demonstrating medication administration

Upon successful completion of all online theory, testing and tutorials, students will qualify to complete their supervised, online Medication Administration Exam.

Graduates will be issued their Medication Administration Certificate.

Learning Resources include the following:

  1. “Sorrentino’s Canadian Textbook for the Support Worker” Fifth edition,
  2. “Medication Administration: A Guide for Unregulated Healthcare Providers” by Persaud, R. & Tabanao, R.

Program Cost is $400 and includes their “Medication Administration: A Guide for Unregulated Healthcare Providers” Persaud, R. & Tabanao, R. textbook.

Students who do not have access to the Sorrentino textbook will be provided with PDF content to meet learning objectives.

Financial Facts


Tuition is $400 and includes all costs and learning resources, except a computer. Financial Aid may be available through your employer, province or regulatory body.
