The Growing Need for Personal Support Workers

According to Statistics Canada, the population aged 85 and older is one of the fastest-growing age groups, with over 861,000 individuals counted in the 2021 Census. By 2046, this population could triple to almost 2.5 million people. Additionally, over 9,500 centenarians are now living in Canada, representing 0.03% of the population.

As the older population continues to grow, the need for PSWs becomes increasingly crucial. Ipsos Canada highlights that nearly one in five Canadians aged 45+ either has a PSW helping them or knows someone who has PSW support. “PSWs play a vital role in providing physical assistance, such as carrying out household tasks, maintaining personal hygiene, and preparing meals. They also provide emotional support, social contact, and enhance the overall quality of life for those they support,” emphasizes Ipsos Canada.

Job Bank Canada reinforces the demand for PSWs, stating that the labour shortage conditions observed in recent years are expected to persist. Over the period 2022-2031, there are projected to be 34,500 new job openings in the field of Home Support Workers, Housekeepers, and related occupations. However, the estimated number of new job seekers is not expected to be sufficient to balance the occupation, resulting in continued shortage conditions.
