Personal Support Worker Foundations

The Personal Support Worker Foundations (PSWF) program is a 320 hour program designed to prepare students to work at an entry level Personal Support Worker (PSW) in the community.

This curriculum is aligned with the ACAHS full PSW Diploma program with reduced study and practicum hours. Graduates from the PSWF program may bridge into the full PSW program and receive credit for content and practicum hours completed.

The program is comprised of 24 modules and include:

  2. Introduction to Health and Community services
  3. Ethical Framework in Healthcare
  4. Legal Framework in Healthcare
  5. Interventions with Families
  6. General Psychology
  7. Observation Methods
  8. Overall Development of Adolescents and Adults
  9. Anatomy and Physiology
  10.  Communication
  11. Introduction to Gerontology and Geriatrics
  12. Physiopathology
  13. Body Mechanics
  14. Introduction to Community Care
  15. Care Procedures I – Theoretical Concepts
  16. Care Procedures II – Theoretical Concepts
  17. Pharmacology
  18. Nutrition
  19. Introduction to Interventions for People with special Needs.
  20. Mental Health, Psychiatry, Learning Disabilities and Addiction Disorders.
  21. Memory Care
  22. Deficiencies and Different Approaches
  23. Rehabilitative Care
  24. Palliative Care

The 290 hours of theory is completed asynchronously in the Moodle Classroom while the hands’ on experience (practicum) is coordinated with their employer.

Students have 32 weeks to complete the program but may finish the program early if all Moodle course work has been successfully completed.

Upon successful completion of the online theory, students may participate in their PSWF certificate exam. The date and time is determined between the student and the proctor. The exam is conducted on Zoom or Teams and students must obtain 70% in order to pass.

Upon successful completion of the PSWF Certification exam and 30 hours of practicum, the student will be awarded their Personal Support Worker Foundations Certificate.

Textbook is Sorrentino’s Canadian Textbook for the Support Worker – 5 th edition.

Financial Facts


Program Cost is $1500. Students are responsible for their learning device, internet access and uniforms. Students who currently work for a facility that employs PSWs may qualify for funding with Post-secondary Education Training and Labour (PETL).
